Welcome to the Week 4 Countdown to 50 Roundup post.
Each week, I’ll be posting a weekly recap of the week’s posts that I’ve been posting over on my Instagram account, and giving a little more info on why I chose the songs I did. If you want to see the entire list, check it out, here. And if you are on Spotify and want to listen to my Countdown to 50 playlist, you can follow and listen to the playlist, here.
Happy Listening!
Day #22 of 365
Song: Hey Ladies
Artist: Beastie Boys
Album: Paul’s Boutique
I love the Beastie Boys! They have some really clever lyrics, and the lyrics of this song are some of the craziest and funniest out there. Plus, the chorus is one that is a total earworm. Once I hear it, I hear myself singing it over and over and over again, “Hey ladies, get funky”. Then of course there is the cowbell!
Day #23 of 365
Song: I Am, I Said
Artist: Neil Diamond
Album: Stones
I love Neil Diamond. He and Barry Manilow are two of my favorite male vocalists. This might be my favorite Neil Diamond song. I love the lyrics, the slow ’70s vibe, and Neil Diamond’s low voice. Plus, the chorus is a very catchy one.
Day #24 of 365
Song: Hot Stuff
Artist: Jerry Reed
Album: Live!
I first discovered Jerry Reed as Snowman in Smokey and the Bandit. A few years later, I saw him again in one of my favorite ’70s comedies, Hot Stuff. If you haven’t seen it, check it out. I have always loved this song and recently realized it is only available as a live version. Too bad they never released a soundtrack for the movie.
Day #25 of 365
Song: 25
Artist: The Pretty Reckless
Album: Death by Rock and Roll
This is such a great song! I love the beginning of the song and how dark and spooky-sounding it is. Again, the lyrics are great and Taylor Momsen’s low, alto voice is amazing. She reminds me of Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, who I absolutely love. The Pretty Reckless is one of my favorite “new” bands. They are great!
Day #26 of 365
Song: Haunted
Artist: Poe
Album: Haunted
You know that question people pose, “If you were stranded on a desert island with only 10 albums, which 10 albums would you bring?” Well, Haunted by Poe would be one of those. I absolutely love Poe and Haunted is such an amazing album. The title song is one of my favorites but not my absolute favorite. That song will be coming up later in the year. It is a shame she only put out two albums.
Day #27 of 365
Song: Feelin’ Good
Artist: Nina Simone
Album: I Put a Spell on You
I heard Nina Simone for the first time a few years ago when I was part of the Love Across the USA Nina Simone crochet project. I crocheted two squares for the crocheted mural in Raleigh, NC. It was an amazing project to be a part of for an amazing female artist from North Carolina. The artist, Olek, played Nina Simone songs while we worked on the mural, and this song quickly became my absolute favorite.
Day #28 of 365
Song: Turn the Page
Artist: Bob Seger
Album: Back in ’72, Live Bullet
Talk about a song with a great story. This song has some of the best lyrics about life on the road as a rock star. And what is even better is that this song is only available as a live version. It really drives home the sound and feeling of life on the road. Plus, it has one of the best saxophone solos in any song. Such a great song!
