Countdown to 50: Week 1 Roundup (Days #1-7 of 365)

Welcome to the Week 1 Countdown to 50 Roundup post.

Each week, I’ll be posting a weekly recap of the week’s posts that I’ve been posting over on my Instagram account, and giving a little more info on why I chose the songs I did. If you want to see the entire list, check it out, here. And if you are on Spotify and want to listen to my Countdown to 50 playlist, you can follow and listen to the playlist, here.

Happy Listening!

Day #1 of 365
Song: Spice Up Your Life
Artist: Spice Girls
Album: Spiceworld

I decided to start with this song because it is such a fun, dance song. If I need something to dance to or a song to pick me up, I always turn to the Spice Girls. This is one of my favorites from them. There will be others from them throughout the year, but they are a little slower-paced.

Day #2 of 365
Song: My Life
Artist: Billy Joel
Album: 52nd Street

This is the song I wish I could play every time someone offers me their opinion on something when I don’t ask. It is such a great song with some really amazing lyrics.

“I don’t need you to worry for me, ’cause I’m alrightI don’t want you to tell me it’s time to come homeI don’t care what you say anymore, this is my lifeGo ahead with your own life, leave me alone”

Day #3 of 365
Song: New Moon on Monday
Artist: Duran Duran
Album: Seven and the Ragged Tiger

As a child of the ’80s, Duran Duran was my Beatles. I was a little late to the New Wave party in the early ’80s and missed the release of the Rio album, so my first exposure to Duran Duran was the music video for The Reflex and the album was Seven and the Ragged Tiger. I really could have added a dozen songs to the countdown list, but I chose only a few. New Moon on Monday was always one of my favorites with my favorite lyrics, “Last time La Luna.” I am such a Duranie!

Day #4 of 365
Song: Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue
Artist: Crystal Gayle
Album: We Must Believe in Magic

We had a lot of country pop in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and I loved all of it. Crystal Gayle with this song was one of my favorites. Crystal has such a soothing voice. Whenever I need a song to listen to when I need to relax or chill, I put on Don’t It Make Your Brown Eyes Blue.

Day #5 of 365
Song: Black Hole Sun
Artist: Soundgarden
Album: Superunkown

I discovered this song from the insanely creepy and freaky video on MTV. If you have never seen this video, check it out, here. It is wild! The song is also a little creepy, but it has a really catchy chorus. I love it!

Day #6 of 365
Song: Hometown Glory
Artist: Adele
Album: 19

I don’t have a lot of 2000 artists on my countdown, but I do love me some Adele. This was the very first song I heard from Adele. It was played on So You Think You Can Dance during a contemporary dance number. I learned two things that day: #1 – I really love contemporary dance and #2 – This is probably my favorite Adele song, ever. I just might need to learn to play it on the piano.

Day #7 of 365
Song: Boogie Wonderland
Artist: Earth, Wind & Fire and The Emotions
Album: I Am

Whenever I am feeling down or sad, I put this song on. I LOVE this song! It always makes me smile, even from the very first note, but Earth, Wind & Fire songs always make me smile. I love their vocals, the music, and the lyrics. And adding The Emotions to the background vocals and chorus makes this song even better. Stay tuned, because both artists will be showing up again later on throughout the countdown.
